Michael Joseph Jacobs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Michael was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA, with his parents, John and Connie, and two brothers, Jack and Tobias. He graduated from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He served in the Army National Guard and was assigned to defend our nation’s capital. He spent most of his professional career working for the United States Government, serving 38 years with the National Security Agency and nearly 20 years as a local elected Councilman, including four years as Mayor of College Park, MD. It was at NSA where he met the love of his life, Ethel. Together, they celebrated 58 wonderful years of marriage, raising their five children: Thad, Terry, Mike, Megan, and Matt.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael was deeply committed to his community. He was active in his church, Holy Redeemer of College Park, as well as in the Boy Scouts and various other organizations. In retirement, he found joy soaking up the sun on his boat, having picnics with Ethel while watching beautiful sunsets, and sharing boat rides and fishing trips with family and friends. He was also an engaged member of the Sons of Italy, a passionate traveler who explored the world and many National Parks, and a devoted friend who always made time for loved ones.
Michael remained active in the field of cybersecurity, continuing to consult for several companies and serving on multiple Boards of Directors. He was the Co-Founder of the National Cyber Security Hall of Fame, where he was inducted on November 16, 2023. His contributions to the cybersecurity field were widely recognized, including receiving the 2005 CISSE Founder’s Award for his leadership and impact on cybersecurity education.
His legacy of service, love, and dedication will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
