2016 Founders Award
Joe Werner has worked in the computer industry for around 50 years, dealing with a variety of businesses, applications, computer systems, networks, and applications. He has served as an IT consultant to various businesses. For the last 20 years, he has taught at Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan, and is now Professor in the Computer Information Technologies program, specializing in computer networking and cybersecurity. He also teaches in the Cisco Networking Academy program at LCC, as an authorized instructor for the CCNA and CCNA Security courses.
Joe holds CompTIA Security+, (ISC)2 CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), and (ISC)2 CSSLP (Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional) certifications, among others, and is recipient (jointly with his wife and colleague Virginia) of the 2016 Founders’ Award from the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE).
Joe first attended the 9th Colloquium in Atlanta in 2005, and has attended each one since. He has participated several times on Program and Paper Review committees, has participated in a panel presentation, and has assisted as a general staffer, troubleshooter, and fill-in at several Colloquia.
“We need educated Information Security professionals to solve the problems of today, and we need ongoing education to provide the professionals who will be needed tomorrow. The Colloquium should continue to be a pre-eminent forum for bringing education, government, and industry together to further Information Systems Security education and training. We must find ways to grow and expand the Colloquium to meet future needs, especially with developing challenges.”
